Historic Hideaway within walking distance from National Trust's Bodnant Gardens
With glorious rural views across the Conwy Valley, this Bolthole for six tucked away down a private driveway, is a haven of peace and quiet. Thoughtfully restored, The Old Barn’s history can be traced back at least the 18C as part of the Bodnod Estate, which was later renamed Bodnant. Today, it is a beautiful historic holiday cottage with a private enclosed garden.
Step through the front door into an entrance hall from where rooms radiate out - two comfortable ground-floor bedrooms, one double and one twin, and a family bathroom. The hallway between the two bedrooms leads to a garden door and out into the garden.
To the left is the open plan living space which just might take your breath away. Whitewashed and full height, the timber-clad pitched ceiling and beautiful original beams give you such a wonderful sense of the origins of this lovely old house. Here is ample space for cooking, eating and relaxing with a modern, well-equipped kitchen, a dining table for six and a spacious seating area with a big wood-burning stove. In warm weather, you can throw open the French doors and step out into the garden - table and chairs for four perch on a compact patio surrounded by lush lawn. This is such a peaceful and calm place - sit back with a good book and a coffee and listen to the birds sing.
Climb the stone stairs up to the first floor where you will find a large double bedroom with an ensuite bathroom. French doors lead out onto a balcony with seating for two and wonderful views out over the fields - perfect for a morning coffee or an evening drink as the sun starts to set.
Guests staying at The Old Barn have consent to use a network of permissive footpaths on the 6000 acre Bodnant Estate - there is a plan in the house that shows you where you can walk and explore. Remember to keep waggy friends on a lead at all times.
Horticultural enthusiasts will love the cottage's close proximity to Bodnant Garden NT, the entrance to which is just a couple of hundred yards down the road. The Pavilion Tea Room is handily located for breakfast, light lunches and homemade cake and is tucked away just by the entrance to the garden. Note that there is no access to Bodnant Garden directly from The Old Barn.
The Bee Inn at Eglwysbach serves a good pint of local beer and home-cooked food - do check its opening hours as it does not open every day. Bodnant Welsh Food is close by and its farm shop sells local produce and takeaway drinks and snacks.
Heading back down to the North Wales coast, Conwy and Llandudno are both about 20 minutes drive away with plenty of things to do and places to eat out. Don’t miss a chance to explore Conwy’s medieval castle and town walls and visit local ice cream makers, Parisella’s. A trip to Llandudno must include time on the stunning curving sweep of the Victorian promenade and a visit to the longest pier in Wales which stretches 700 metres out over the sea. And the views from the Great Orme out over the coastlines of the mainland and Anglesey are stunning.
Inland from The Old Barn follows the beautiful Conwy Valley up towards Llanrwst and onwards to Betws y Coed. There are miles of good hiking and cracking mountain biking territory. The ropes course, bouncy nets and forest roller coaster at Zip World Fforest will delight children of all ages with a head for heights.
A stay at The Old Barn offers the best of all worlds - the wonderful North Wales coastline is a short drive away, you can be on Anglesey within 40 minutes of leaving the house and into Snowdonia in less. The historic towns of Chester and Caernarfon can both be reached within the hour. And with footpaths and beautiful scenery on your doorstep, you choose to put the car keys away and explore on foot at your leisure.
